Giants’ sign GM Joe Schoen to a contract extension

· Yahoo Sports

The New York Giants made a decision that, depending on your zip code, lands very differently. As another weekend approached, it was a busy day for the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles, with a handful of days until the start of OTAs, made their coordinators available to the media. Meanwhile, in East Rutherford, the Giants were busy extending their top executive.

Per NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Giants have agreed to a multi-year extension with general manager Joe Schoen, signaling organizational confidence after what many viewed as a productive offseason. New York clearly believes the franchise is moving in the right direction, particularly after an encouraging NFL Draft haul and the arrival of John Harbaugh, who should absolutely make them more competitive.

This is a nice show of confidence in Schoen and the direction he is taking the Giants. Eagles fans and the Philadelphia media, however, may interpret this decision and announcement a bit differently.

That isn't meant as lazy rivalry banter. It's rooted in a fairly simple reality that applies across every profession, not just football. Better-run organizations tend to outperform poorly run ones. Leadership matters. Talent evaluation matters. Culture matters. Businesses that consistently identify the right people, empower smart decision-makers, and avoid self-inflicted wounds generally win more than their competition.

Philadelphia understands that formula well. Jeffrey Lurie is widely viewed as one of professional sports’ better owners. Howie Roseman has spent years strengthening his argument as the NFL's premier general manager. The Eagles don't always make perfect decisions, but the larger machine consistently works because competent leadership sits at the top.

That hasn't exactly been the Giants' story. Saquon Barkley remains the easiest example to point toward. During his time in New York, he never sniffed a Super Bowl. Joe Schoen ultimately decided to let one of the franchise's most recognizable stars walk, and Barkley responded by winning a championship in his first season with Philadelphia.

That's the kind of optics rival fan bases don't forget. To be fair, New York may be improving. Pro Football Focus recently listed the Giants as one of the more viable of the eight worst-to-first candidates, and John Harbaugh's arrival changes the conversation considerably. Serious coaches elevate organizations. Better structure leads to better outcomes. No one should dismiss that.

Still, let's not confuse improvement with overtaking Philadelphia. The Eagles remain the NFC East's measuring stick until proven otherwise. They've controlled this rivalry more often than not because they've been the more stable, better-managed, and frankly more talented organization. That's why Schoen's extension feels interesting. Maybe he proves everyone wrong. Maybe this is the foundation for a legitimate turnaround. Maybe New York becomes far more annoying than Eagles fans would prefer.

Or maybe the Giants simply committed longer to the executive who helped usher in years of mediocrity. If the latter proves true, Eagles fans probably won't lose much sleep over this one. They might wind up celebrating the move.
