The biggest story this offseason with the Minnesota Vikings focuses on their quarterback competition.

We know that Kyler Murray‘s signing signaled a major shift in the Vikings’ future. When J.J. McCarthy was selected at 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, it was the first time the Vikings had ever selected a quarterback that high. It was evident how serious the Vikings were at finding a quarterback of the future, but it hasn’t turned out the way anyone wanted to.

Now, the question surrounding the Vikings is simple: what is the future of McCarthy?

One key element could hinder J.J. McCarthy’s future

The next stage for McCarthy is going to be the competition with Murray. Many, myself included, believe it’s a foregone conclusion that Murray will win the job. Even so, there are many out there who still believe in McCarthy.

There are many things that McCarthy needs to work on over the next few months in order to be the Vikings’ future at quarterback. The biggest one from an on-field perspective is consistency, but doing the same off-the-field needs to be remedied as well. The Athletic’s Alec Lewis highlighted that in his latest piece.

Then there's the consistency piece: how McCarthy shows up to work every day and how his habits progress in his third season. The Vikings have a high standard at the position. They want the starting quarterback to lift the tide for the entire team in 2026. This requires a level of discipline, which was up and down last season for McCarthy.

The off-field issues haven’t been discussed nearly enough, mainly because we aren’t in the meeting and weight rooms. However, consistency off the field translates to your performance on the field. It was evident on film that McCarthy was far from consistent. Now, how much consistency should we expect from a first-year starting quarterback? That in itself is a question.

It’s nearly impossible to expect the performance on the field to be consistent, but how you go about your process is what’s important. If McCarthy wasn’t going about his process in the right way, that’s a major problem. How much of that can be fixed in one offseason? Will he take the proper steps needed to be consistent? That could be the key to unlocking him.

If he does become consistent, the flashes are there.

Only time will tell what McCarthy can and will be at the next level, but it’s evident that there are issues to clean up.
