Stephanie White’s Cryptic Response on Caitlin Clark’s Unavailability Invites More Criticism from Fans

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White is facing criticism from onlookers for how she addressed the unavailability of Fever superstar Caitlin Clark in their recent regular season game. On Wednesday, May 20, the Indiana-based franchise was facing the Portland Fire on its home floor.

But just moments before tip-off, Clark was suddenly ruled out with a back injury that came out of nowhere. During a pre-game press conference, coach White was asked about Clark suddenly becoming unavailable, and she gave many cryptic responses.

White was uncertain about details on Clark’s injury, and was unsure about what the next few days would look like for the spitfire scorer. The whole Fever franchise was also criticized for initially not listing Clark on the injury report prior.

WNBA fans and spectators are not too keen towards how White addressed Clark’s injury by criticizing her for it.

“Sounds like she forgot to be vague,” one fan said.

“Why didn’t anyone ask if it had anything to do with the Argument between her & the coach?!!!,” another fan exclaimed.

“That answer was laughable, and she didn’t practice but not on injury report as questionable “back”. They’re embarrassing a joke, and they don’t care about the fans whatever they say ’cause you don’t treat them like this. One, spending hard earned cash to go watch CC. Two, thinking they’re thick,” another user explained.

“‘No, there’s not. Or, I don’t know.’ Astonishing,” a fan shared.

Other users all over X/Twitter questioned the validity of Clark sitting out at all when it comes to the true reason why she did.

“People are right, she missed practice with the injury yesterday. But the Fever said there were no injuries on the report. How does the Indy media let the Fever get away with lying???,” one fan pointed out.

“Then why wasn’t she reported as questionable today instead of the Fever telling us there were no injuries and waiting until the last minute to scratch her. Very suspicious! Very disrespectful to the fans!,” another fan wrote.

“And yet waited until just over 90 minutes ’til tipoff to make the announcement. Irresponsible. Bush league,” a fan posted.

There is no word yet on how long Clark will be out or whether she will miss the Fever’s next game, which is on Friday, May 22, against the Golden State Valkyries, still at home. The 24-year-old has played in all four Indiana games prior to the one against the Fire. Last season, she played just 13 games due to a nagging groin injury.

Despite playing without Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever still managed to blow out the Portland Fire by 17 points, 90-73. This is the Fever’s third win of the 2026 season in five games, and their first at home.

Previously, they dropped their first two games at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the win, Indiana was led by forward Aliyah Boston, who had 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
