Elina Svitolina feels ready for Roland Garros after the Italian Open title
Elina Svitolina heads to Roland Garros with plenty of confidence after lifting her third career title at the Italian Open.
The Ukrainian now has 20 career titles to her name on the WTA Tour, with this latest victory coming after an exhausting final in Rome. Svitolina defeated Gauff 6-4, 6-7(3-7), 6-2 in a match that lasted nearly three hours.

It was a hard-fought contest between the experienced Svitolina and the younger Gauff. The win adds to her previous Italian Open titles from 2017 and 2018.
Svitolina’s journey to the title included notable wins over Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek, both of which she spoke about afterwards.

When asked about her wins and how she plans to stay focused and manage any pressure heading into the French Open, Svitolina told the WTA website: “If you want to be at the highest level, you need to be consistent.
“You have many tournaments, and you need to be at your best at the big tournaments and throughout the year to be high in the rankings and be a great player.
“That’s why I’m proud of the effort, the performance and the form I picked up. I think it was good for me to reset after Madrid.
“I had eight good days of training and a physical block, which was a nice buildup for this tournament and Roland Garros.
“Now I have a couple of days to rest. I’m going home tomorrow, and I’m going to have a couple of days to completely forget about tennis and just be a mom and enjoy my time with my family.”
Elina Svitolina gives her view on Ukrainian tennis after her win in Rome
She’s set to take a short break with family, but it won’t be long before preparations for Roland Garros pick up again.
There’s already talk about Svitolina being a dark horse for the French Open, and the same could be said for fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who recently won in Madrid.
Reflecting on Ukraine’s rise in tennis following these recent successes, Svitolina told WTA: “I think it’s at a high. Having seven Top 100 players is great motivation for the upcoming generation.
“It’s a great example that when you work hard and dream big, you can make it happen. So it’s great for us, for Ukrainian tennis, and I’m very happy with that.
“The girls in the Top 100 right now are younger than me, so I’m happy I still have something to show and can win titles.”
Svitolina isn’t the only one attracting attention ahead of Roland Garros. Gauff heads into Paris as the defending champion and remains a strong contender given her current form.
Aryna Sabalenka has also been tipped by some to win the French Open despite an early exit in Rome, while Swiatek was named favourite by Maria Sharapova, adding another layer of intrigue to what should be an open tournament this year.
