The Los Angeles Dodgers have struggled as of late, and there’s no way around that. The starting rotation simply hasn’t been able to find a groove, as pitchers have been going down with injuries left and right.

The latest injury to the starting staff is Blake Snell, who made his season debut just a week ago. Snell will now undergo a common elbow procedure.

“Blake Snell has loose bodies in his left elbow, and the Los Angeles Dodgers' two-time Cy Young Award winner is once again sidelined indefinitely. The left-hander was a late scratch from his second start of the season Friday at Angel Stadium. Snell only made his season debut last weekend after missing the first six weeks of the season with left shoulder fatigue and inflammation,” ESPN wrote.

The unique aspect of this situation for Snell is that he is attempting to fast-track his recovery. He is set to use the same surgeon as Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.

“Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery on Dodgers Blake Snell. Possible that he will be able to use the same arthroscopic procedure (Nano Needle) he used on Tarik Skubal. Less damage to tissue, quicker return. Skubal was playing light catch 5 days after his procedure,” Dodgers beat writer Bill Plunkett wrote.

The normal recovery timeline for loose bodies in the elbow is typically two to three months. However, with the same surgeon Snell is expected to use, Skubal was projected to return in as little as a month.

“Typically, an arthroscopy to remove loose bodies or a bone chip in a pitcher's elbow has required two to three months of recovery and rehabilitation. However, there is hope in the Tigers clubhouse that Skubal could be back in a month,” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote.

It appears that this is the route both the Dodgers and Snell want to take. The southpaw has already missed most of the season, and he clearly does not want another lengthy absence. If everything goes according to plan, Snell could return much sooner than expected.

However, fast-tracking an injury recovery can be risky, so the Dodgers will need to make sure everything progresses properly. Nonetheless, Snell appears set to mimic Skubal’s recovery process throughout this situation, starting with the surgeon.
