The Boston Red Sox's farm system was dealt an unfortunate blow as their No. 4 prospect, Juan Valera, will reportedly miss the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

"Red Sox pitching prospect Juan Valera underwent Tommy John surgery, according to an industry source," MassLive's Christopher Smith wrote on Wednesday. "He was limited to 10 starts in 2025 due to elbow inflammation.

"The righty is one of the hardest throwers in the minor leagues. He topped out at 100.5 mph and averaged 99.3 mph with his four-seam fastball in Boston’s Spring Breakout game March 20. He hit triple-digits three times and threw 12 of his 16 four-seamers at 99.4 mph or harder during that showcase game between the Red Sox prospects and Orioles prospects."

Valera, a Dominican Republic native, is one of the most promising young pitchers in the Red Sox's farm system. The 6-foot-3 hurler opened the regular season in High-A Greenville, where he was excelling early on this season before getting injured.

The 19-year-old posted a 1.93 ERA across his three starts, fanning 17 batters while allowing just two runs and four hits in 9 1/3 innings pitched. Valera signed with the Red Sox in 2023 and, in 46 outings, has posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in the minor leagues.

Valera is one of Boston's most intriguing prospects, but his durability and injury history are concerning. The fireballer can make a big impact when healthy and will look to climb through the Red Sox's farm system when he returns from Tommy John surgery.
