3 dead in Colombian monster truck crash

At least three people died and 38 were injured at a monster truck show in Colombia when a vehicle ploughed into a group of spectators following a failed stunt, authorities said.

A young girl was reportedly among those killed and several children were injured in the accident in Popayan, Colombia, where families gathered to watch a monster truck show. Social media images showed the truck doing a wheelie before it swerved off the track and crashed into the crowd.
Police believe the driver’s brakes failed during a show on Sunday. Video of the incident showed people running as the truck crashed through a barrier and ploughed into the crowd, before coming to a stop, hitting an electricity pole.
A 10-year-old girl died at the scene, according to a report from Colombian news outlet El Espectado r.
“The vehicle accelerated, it couldn’t brake, and the driver is in stable condition,” Popayan police commander Col Julian Castaneda told outlet El Tiempo.
“We are deeply pained by the accident … which has preliminarily left more than 38 people injured and 3 dead,” Popayan mayor Juan Carlos Munoz wrote on X .
Regional governor Octavio Guzman said: “We express our solidarity with the families of those affected by this tragic accident, as well as with our capital city, Popayan.”

Francisco Arboleda, head of the Popayan fire department, said some of the spectators rushed to hospital were in serious condition.
Andres Hurtado, a paramedic who was standing close to the scene when the crash occurred, said he treated three people who were badly injured, including a girl.
Munoz ordered an investigation into the disaster, which he said “should never have happened.”
