At this point, a groundbreaking Golden State Warriors offseason trade is only a matter of time.
It’s no longer a question of if the Dubs will complete a deal, but rather who they will acquire in a trade to help Stephen Curry inch closer to championship contention in the Bay. While the Dubs could add new trade targets to their list this summer, they’ll likely pursue assets that were on the radar before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Per Blue Man Hoop’s Peter O’Keefe, a 33-year-old superstar who was recently traded by the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, may pique the Warriors' interest again this summer.
“Warriors' timeline aligns with Anthony Davis,” O’Keefe wrote Saturday. "Say what you want about Golden State's ability to contend after finishing 10th in the Western Conference and failing to make the playoffs, but at the very least, they'll remain relevant while Stephen Curry remains at the franchise.”
“Dallas had approached Golden State about a Davis trade before he was dealt to Washington, suggesting there was a level of interest that could have materialized if not for his lengthy injury concerns.”
“The Warriors instead took a chance on another injury-prone yet cheaper center in Kristaps Porzingis, but his potential departure in free agency may leave a major hole at the five that could force them to reconsider a Davis trade.”
Davis probably didn’t expect to get traded twice in less than two years. It’s reasonable to assume that the expectation was for him to continue competing with the Lakers until he announced his retirement from the league.
As we all know, though, that’s not how things panned out for the 10-time All-Star, as the Lakers sent him to the Mavericks midway through the 2024-25 season for Luka Doncic, who’s been a revelation for Los Angeles thus far.
Before this year’s Feb. 5 trade deadline, the Mavericks shipped Davis to the Washington Wizards for a significant haul. Due to a hand injury, Davis didn’t appear in a game with Washington this season, and NBA insider Chris Haynes recently reported that the future Hall of Famer could get traded before the start of the next season.
Davis would undoubtedly be the most skilled big man the Warriors have had in the Curry era. Whether possessing a lethal face-up game in the mid-post, being a surefire lob threat in pick-and-roll situations, or protecting the rim better than most frontcourt contributors, Davis makes his presence felt every time he steps on the floor.
However, could Davis’ concerning injury history scare the Dubs off this summer? It’s definitely possible, but it likely won’t stop them from inquiring about the 6-foot-10 NBA champion.
