The Miami Dolphins ended Day 1 of the draft with offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and cornerback Chris Johnson in two separate first-round trades.

The latter occurred when the Dolphins traded up to No. 27 in a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Miami sent picks 30 and 90 to San Francisco.

Why 49ers, Dolphins made trade

The Dolphins are a team in a rebuild and they were void of a No. 1 cornerback.

Is Johnson a No. 1? It remains to be seen but not many scouts viewed him as a first-round pick. Many mock drafts had the San Diego State product being selected in the second round.

Johnson is a versatile corner and can fit in multiple schemes. He was the Mountain West Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Mountain West member after tallying four interceptions and nine pass breakups in 2025. However, he didn't play against a lot of high-end talent and did have difficult moments versus physical wide receivers.

The 49ers decided to trade pick No. 30 to the New York Jets who selected wide receiver Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr.

How trade affects rest of draft board

The 49ers have the first pick in the second round as a result of their trades on Thursday. Prospects such as CB Jermod McCoy, CB Colton Hood, edge Zion Young, edge Cashius Howell and guard Chase Bisontis are still available. The 49ers have needs along their offensive and defensive lines.
