Baseball: Miller's home run provides walk-off win for Pirates

Visiting South Dearborn scored a run in the top of the first inning at Greensburg Thursday. It was all Greensburg from that point. The Pirates scored five runs in both the third and sixth inning to sail to the 14-3 victory.

Greensburg’s Zayden Miller stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and blasted a home run to left field to score Ethan Bishop and Luke Hoeing and seal the walk-off victory for the Pirates.

The Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning with a Logan Meyer ground out that scored Ayden Sefton. Greensburg added three runs in the second inning. Miller singled in Patrick Robbins. Sefton singled to score Hoeing and a base-loaded hit by pitch on Chase Walsman forced in Sefton to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead.

In the third inning, Hoeing flew out to left field to score Robbins. A Sefton triple drove in Bishop and Miller. Ethan Smith reached on an error to score Sefton and Walsman doubled to drive in Smith.

In the sixth inning, Colt McCalvin scored on an error. Hoeing singled to score Robbins and set the table for Miller’s game-ending blast.

Miller had a team-high four RBIs to go with a home run and two singles. Sefton finished with a triple, single and three RBIs. Walsman had two doubles and two RBIs. Robbins added a pair of singles. Hoeing had a single, double and two RBIs. Bishop had a double.

Jacob Duerstock got the win on the mound for Greensburg. Duerstock pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six.

South Decatur 10, Brown County 0

South Decatur’s Corey Nugent held visiting Brown County to just one hits in the Cougars’ 10-0 victory Thursday.

Nugent pitched 5.0 innings for South, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 10.

South scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Cayden Drake sacrifice fly scored Nugent for the game’s first run. A double by Drake Scaggs scored Garrett Huckleberry to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Nugent singled to score Aidan Bryant. Carter Tull’s ground out drove in Karson Templeton. Grady Scudder’s infield hit plated Nugent to make it 5-0.

South added five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tull singled to score Templeton. Drake doubled to right field to score Scudder, Nugent and Tull. Drake scored on a steal of home plate to push the lead to 10-0.

Drake (2) and Scaggs had extra base hits for the Cougars. Templeton added two singles. Drake had a team-high four RBIs. Tull drove in two runs.

North Decatur 24, Edinburgh 2

In two games against Edinburgh, North Decatur outscored the Lancers 47-4 to post a pair of MHC wins. The Chargers knocked off the Lancers 23-2 at home Wednesday and 24-2 at Edinburgh Thursday.

Wednesday, Corbin Thackery and Tyler Dean both homered for the Chargers. Wyatt Reisman added a triple. Eli Trenkamp had three singles and Matthew Fields finished with two singles. Henry Kinker, Grayson Downey, Gage Gabbard, Kipton Ruf and Brayden Murray all had a single. Thackery and Murray both had three RBIs. Ruf, Reisman and Downey all had two RBIs.

Edinburgh did not have a hit against North pitching. Fields pitched 3.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Trenkamp pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two walks while striking out two.

Thursday, Dean got the win on the mound for North, pitching 3.0 innings with one hit, two walks and four strikeouts. Murray pitched 2.0 innings, allowing three walks while striking out four.

Fields had the lone extra base hit for North with a double. Kinker, Reisman (2), Hunter Fruchtnicht, Fields (2), Hayden Koehne (2), Dean (2), Trenkamp, Ruf and Murray all singled for the Chargers.

Fields finished with a team-high five RBIs. Dearn added four RBIs. Trenkamp, Corey Jarman and Ruf all drove in two runs.

Batesville 9, Franklin County 0

Holding a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, Batesville scored six runs to pull away to the 9-0 victory against Franklin County.

William Huber pitched 6.0 innings for Batesville, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out three. Ronan Post pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Offensively, Jackson Elston (2 RBIs) had the lone extra base hit with a double. Noah Weigel had a pair of singles. Post finished with two singles and two RBIs. Brayden Maple and Huber both had a single and RBI. Preston Blessing added a single and Rylan Yeager had an RBI.

Franklin County won the junior varsity game 11-8. Batesville tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double by Lane Higham and a passed ball. Declan Meyer grounded out, which helped Batesville tie the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh.

Doll pitched 6.0 innings, allowing no earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two. Michael Linville, Eli Doll and Higham each collected two hits for Batesville. Linville, Doll, Higham, Hochstetler, and Meyer each drove in one run for Batesville.

Lawrenceburg 1, Rushville 0

One run in the bottom of the third inning was all host Lawrenceburg needed to hold off the Lions 1-0.

Lawrenceburg’s Mulcahey reached on an error by Rushville, allowing Bray to score the only run of the game.

The Lions finished with four hits. Trent Smith finished with two singles. Carter Woolf and Casey Thompson both had one single.

Smith pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out five.
