WARMINGTON: Fairview Mall security guard shooting Toronto's cruel reality in 2026
· Toronto Sun

A security guard lying on the floor of a shopping mall suffering from a gunshot wound over jewelry is not something that law-abiding and decent Torontonians are prepared to tolerate.

The fatal Eaton Centre shooting of 2012 is a gross stain on Toronto that has never healed.
And now, 14 years later, a security guard has been shot in a mall .
It’s a darkness that can’t be glossed over. Nor can this be deemed as normal. It is not. However, the disturbing imagery circulating on social media of a guard with what appears to be a towel placed underneath his bloody shirt is the reality of 2026. It’s not easy to see a hardworking man in pain after being shot for merely doing his job.
But it happened.
Don’t look now, but the reality is, violence can go down anywhere and at any time.
This time it was 10 a.m. Tuesday, as Fairview Mall opened its doors for the day.
Soon after, a male suspect — later identified as Kyle Douglas Prouse, 53, of Montreal — allegedly stole a quantity of jewelry from the popular Michael Hill shop and, Toronto Police indicate, fled first on foot and then from the parking lot in a white, “construction-style van” heading south on Don Mills Rd.
Police later said the white van had been recovered in the Shaughnessy-George Henry Blvd. area and that the suspect fled that area in a black Honda Accord.
Police are looking for Prouse, who they described as a “white male between 5-foot-6 and 6 feet who was wearing a grey hoodie and pants, a blue baseball cap, and a white medical mask.” Police added that there were flecks of white paint on his clothing.
Cops said the accused also has ties to Toronto and Vancouver. He is also wanted in connection with a break-and-enter investigation in Durham Region in August 2023.
Police have released images of the suspect. Anyone with information, or who knows him, is asked to call any police division or Crimestoppers. He will be facing more than robbery charges, so it’s not wise to confront him. Let police handle it.
This incident changes the game in some ways. This was not just a shooting of a security man protecting a store in a shopping mall, but also an escalation of the dark realities of modern-day jewelry heists and the relentless smash-and-grabs that have plagued the GTA in recent years.
Dangerous time
It’s a dangerous time for businesses, for store employees, shoppers and, perhaps especially, for security. This robber was not only armed with a gun but allegedly used it to shoot an unarmed guard who was doing his job to try to keep his store’s expensive merchandise safe.
What a coward this accused gunman is. Imagine using lethal force on a fellow human being who’s not able to respond in kind. It’s a gutless, evil action to shoot anybody, let alone someone in a vulnerable position.
This had the elements and potential to turn out far worse. If not for the quick action of some life-saving heroes inside the Fairview Mall on Tuesday, and Toronto paramedics and surgeons at Sunnybrook hospital, this easily could have turned into a homicide.
A centimetre here or there and this could have turned into a hunt for a murderer. As it is, there is a manhunt on for the robber and shooter who Insp. Kristy Smith of the Toronto Police’s Hold Up Squad believes was acting alone.
The only good news in this is, it seems that this very brave security guard has gone from suffering what was originally life-threatening wounds to his mid-section, to now being expected to make a full recovery.
“He is stable,” a relieved Smith said. “Our thoughts are with the victim who is a member of the mall security team and works closely with our officers on a regular basis.”
With the mall staffed with officers who regularly patrol the mall, this easily could have been a police officer struck. There will be more police noticeable around the re-opened mall in the coming days because there is an understanding that people are scared.
“We understand how concerning this is,” Smith said. “An incident like this has effects for the community.”
This sure was close to being something this city would never forget. And, still, should never forget. Remember, had this been a store clerk shot or a brave Samaritan intervening, or even a police officer, it’s a story that would be talked about around the world.
When you see that video of that shot security guard being turned over to be treated, it seems obvious it still should be talked about.
