Six areas to face four-day water outage in Johannesburg

· The South African

Johannesburg residents in six areas are set to experience a prolonged water interruption as authorities prepare for scheduled maintenance at the Chiawelo Reservoir.

The water outage will affect Chiawelo and its extensions, Midway, Protea South, Protea North, and parts of Dlamini, leaving households without water for several days.

Planned maintenance to disrupt the water supply

The water supply interruption will begin on 14 April at 6:00 and continue until 17 April at 18:00. Officials confirmed that the shutdown is part of essential maintenance work and is due to the “cleaning of Chiawelo Reservoir.”

During this period, all streets within the affected areas will experience a complete water outage. Johannesburg Water have urged residents to prepare in advance by storing sufficient water for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.

Extended impact beyond four days

While the planned outage is expected to last four days, officials warned that the impact may extend beyond this timeframe. According to the notice, residents should expect “no water for a duration of 4 days, excluding the recovery period.”

The recovery process could take additional time as the reservoir needs to refill. It was indicated that it may take “plus/minus two days to fill the Reservoir,” meaning some households could face up to six days without a water supply in total.

This extended disruption is likely to place pressure on daily routines, particularly for households without alternative water sources. Residents are encouraged to use water sparingly ahead of the shutdown and explore contingency plans where possible.

Long-term benefits for residents

Despite the inconvenience, officials maintain that the maintenance work will improve water service delivery in the long run. The project aims to ensure better infrastructure performance and reliability.

Johannesburg Water highlighted that the intervention would result in “improved service delivery, continuity of water supply,” once the system is fully operational again. Reservoir cleaning is expected to improve water quality and reduce the risk of unplanned outages.
