Waste disposal plant in Etobicoke goes up in flames

· Toronto Sun

Dozens of firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze at a waste disposal plant in south Etobicoke Wednesday morning.

Toronto Fire says crews responded to the industrial fire on Shorncliffe Rd.  – between North Queen St. and Newbridge Rd. – around 5 a.m., after a passerby spotted smoke billowing from the building and called 911.

“Multiple aerials” and as many as “80 firefighters” worked to extinguish the flames, Toronto Fire said in a post on X.

Fire crews attacked the blaze from the outside and brought it under control, containing it within the building by 8 a.m.

“We have a good handle on the fire,” Division Commander Robert Hewson told reporters at the scene.

It’s believed nobody was inside the building when the fire erupted, so no injuries have been reported.

“The facility is a waste depot for construction materials,”  Hewson  explained. “So obviously we have a lot of construction material, and the equipment inside  – machinery that moves that material – also was engulfed in the flames.”

A section of Shorncliffe Rd. had to be shut down because of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Toronto Police but is reportedly not thought to be suspicious.
