Alex Call Jokes About Pregame Incident Against Former Team

· Yahoo Sports

After a scary pregame moment ahead of Saturday’s game, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Alex Call seemed to be in high spirits.

During pregame batting practice, a stray line drive off of the bat of former teammate Brady House struck Call in the chest. He declared he was alright afterwards, and went on to make his first start of the season. After the game, he spoke with the media about the incident.

“Not ideal,” Call said with a smile. “It’s all good. I’ve been hit with a baseball in pretty much every part of the body… I think Muncy was behind me, so I took a bullet for [him].”

He went 2-for-5 in the contest, hitting a double and driving in a run in his first game of the season. He got the nod again in the final game of the series, going 2-for-3 with another double and two walks while scoring two runs.

Call is used to playing at Nationals Park, as he spent time with the NL East side from 2022-25. He played 265 games for the team during that time, hitting 19 homers and recording 91 RBIs. The Nationals traded Call to the Dodgers at the trade deadline last season in exchange for pitching prospects Sean Paul Liñan and Eriq Swan.

What is Alex Call’s Role This Season?

Call is likely to fill in as a corner outfielder whenever Kyle Tucker or Teoscar Hernandez need a rest day, just as he did over the weekend.

Hernandez sat on the sidelines for the first time this season in Call’s first start of the year on Saturday, and Tucker got most of the game off in the series finale.

Call played a similar role for the Dodgers in the 2025 season, featuring in 38 games and logging just 73 at-bats for the team during that time. He still had decent numbers as the Dodgers’ fourth-choice outfielder last season, slashing .247/.333/.384 during his time with LA.

While he isn’t one of the Dodgers’ biggest stars, Call definitely has a huge role to play throughout the season, and will assist the team as best he can as they look for a three-peat. Call isn’t in the Dodgers’ lineup for their game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, but will look to get a shot off the bench as LA looks to extend their win streak to four.

First pitch for the series opener comes at 4:05 p.m. PT.
