Why do Pirates play at 4:12 p.m.?
It's for the Pittsburgh area code: 412.
That's honestly a great reason.
Thanks to Konnor Griffin I learned the Pirates start their home openers at 4:12 in honor of their area code and I have been trying to think which team would have it worst if all teams were required to do this.

One area code pointed out in replies to that Janes post is Sacramento, which has a 916 area code and is where the Athletics are currently playing.
Others also pointed out that one of the Chicago area codes is 773, which couldn't even actually be a time.
Pittsburgh will all be watching Friday at 4:12 p.m., not just because it's the home opener, but because it's top prospect Konnor Griffin's debut.
He's the No. 1 prospect in the entire sport, and after a week at Triple-A, Griffin has arrived.
He could be a superstar. No one will want to miss his first start.
