Nagelsmann defends Wirtz against harsh Liverpool criticism

Wirtz joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen last summer for a significant fee, but has found it difficult to adapt to the Premier League’s intense physical demands.

Nagelsmann believes the harsh scrutiny directed at the 22-year-old has been excessive and unnecessary.

“The harshness of it wasn’t justified,” the coach stated during the post-match interview. He described the situation as perfectly normal for any young person. Wirtz is a person with feelings who must face opposition.

The pair grew closer during this challenging professional period at Anfield. Consequently, they shared many productive conversations where Wirtz opened up tremendously.

Nagelsmann praised the player’s intelligence and his incredibly open nature. “He’s an intelligent, incredibly open guy,” the manager noted while discussing their bond.

“He can take a lot away from this phase,” Nagelsmann added confidently. He believes Wirtz will emerge stronger than ever before from this experience.

Wirtz silenced his doubters with two goals and two assists in Basel. Nagelsmann was particularly impressed by his work rate as a left-sided number 10.

“What sets him apart is his commitment,” the manager remarked. He highlighted the player’s exceptional effort to run and work hard. Moreover, this tireless energy remains a vital hallmark of his game.

Wirtz is already a major name in world football. Nagelsmann believes he will remain at the top for a long time. He possesses the necessary energy to succeed at any elite club.

Germany now prepare to face Ghana in their final warm-up match. This fixture takes place on Tuesday in Frankfurt. Wirtz remains a vital part of the 2026 World Cup campaign.

The tournament begins in June across North America. Furthermore, Nagelsmann expects more big performances from his star playmaker this summer.
