Real Madrid out of the race for 26-year-old Bundesliga defender

With Real Madrid seeking to sign a new centre-back in the summer transfer window, Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a key target.
The 26-year-old defender’s profile is greatly appreciated at Valdebebas while the fact that his contract stands to expires in 2027 makes him an even more appealing option.

With the German international being reluctant to renew initially, a move seemed likely at one point. However, things have taken a drastic U-turn in recent days.
Real Madrid out of race for Schlotterbeck
Indeed, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Real Madrid are now out of the race to sign Schlotterbeck as he is all set to sign a new contract with Borussia Dortmund.
Indeed, the left-footed centre-back has reached an agreement in principle over a new deal with the Bundesliga heavyweights.
It will see Schlotterbeck extend his stay at Signal Iduna Park until the summer of 2031, while he will also become the highest earner at the club, with a salary reported to be around €14 million per year.

The new contract will also contain a release clause which will become active from 2027.
Everything has been agreed between the two parties and the only thing remaining is for Schlotterbeck to give his final approval and sign the deal.
As such, Real Madrid are no longer in the race to sign the German international, with Liverpool also dropping out from his pursuit.
Given the situation, Los Blancos are fast running out of options to reinforce their backline. After all, other targets like William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano have also signed new contracts with their clubs, while Marc Guehi joined Manchester City in January.
Liverpool mainstay Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires this summer, remains an option for Real Madrid.
