Visit hilogame.news for more information.

Opening Day for the Tigers is 4:10 p.m. Thursday, March 26, against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, beginning the 2026 season. The Tigers set their 26-man roster with two catchers, six infielders, five outfielders, five starting pitchers and eight relief pitchers.

The goal?

Win the American League Central – and the World Series.

Here's the 26-man Opening Day roster, with one question about every player:

Catchers (2)

Dillon Dingler

Age: 27. MLB debut: 2024.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .278 batting average, 13 home runs, 57 RBIs, 126 games.

Can he get even better on offense? Dingler became the Tigers' first Gold Glove catcher since 2007. He also posted a .752 OPS – the best by a Tigers catcher with at least 450 plate appearances since 2011. To reach All-Star status, his offense must take another step forward in 2026. Boosting his walk rate is a good place to start.

Jake Rogers

Age: 30. MLB debut: 2019.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .187, 3 HR, 19 RBIs, 46 G.

Do Tigers re-sign him? Rogers lost the starting job to Dingler after an injury but remained steady in limited opportunities, especially on defense – along with being a leader in the clubhouse. He enters 2026 in a contract year, so he has a chance to earn a new deal in free agency.

Infielders (6)

UTIL Javier Báez

Age: 33. MLB debut: 2014.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .257, 12 HR, 57 RBIs, 126 G.

Is this his final Tigers season? Báez provided positive defense across four positions while rebounding to a .680 OPS. With two years and $48 million remaining, his performance in 2026 could determine whether he finishes the contract or the Tigers eat the final $24 million.

3B/1B Colt Keith

Age: 24. MLB debut: 2024.

Bats/throws: Left/right.

Stats in 2025: .256, 13 HR, 45 RBIs, 137 G.

How many home runs can he hit? Keith improved with better discipline and harder contact, resulting in a .764 OPS – but he hit just 13 home runs for the second straight season. In 2026, he must avoid another slow start if he wants to unlock the 20-homer power that's always been there.

SS/3B Kevin McGonigle

Age: 21. MLB debut: N/A.

Bats/throws: Left/right.

Stats in 2025 (Double-A): .254, 12 HR, 41 RBIs, 46 G.

Can he win Rookie of the Year? McGonigle brings elite bat-to-ball skills, smart swing decisions, an advanced approach and defensive versatility to his MLB debut, giving him a strong foundation for immediate impact. He is the favorite to win the 2026 AL Rookie of the Year, though others have more experience.

UTIL Zach McKinstry

Age: 30. MLB debut: 2020.

Bats/throws: Left/right.

Stats in 2025: .259, 12 HR, 49 RBIs, 144 G.

Is breakout repeatable? McKinstry broke through with a .771 OPS after years of struggles at the plate, while continuing to provide value as a sharp baserunner and versatile defender. He remains in a utility role in 2026, but he needs to prove the offense is sustainable.

1B Spencer Torkelson

Age: 26. MLB debut: 2022.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .240, 31 HR, 78 RBIs, 155 G.

Can he get off roller coaster? Torkelson avoided another Triple-A demotion by setting a career high in batting average, tying his career high in home runs and setting a career high with a .789 OPS. He enters 2026 as an established hitter, but he can't afford another regression as he aims to prove his consistency.

2B Gleyber Torres

Age: 29. MLB debut: 2018.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .256, 16 HR, 74 RBIs, 145 G.

Is he worth $22.025 million? Torres was the steal of free agency with an elite on-base profile that led to a .745 OPS, only for his performance to plummet while playing through an injury. He decided to return in 2026 by accepting the one-year qualifying offer, but he wants a long-term contract once he gets to free agency again.

Outfielders (5)

RF/DH Kerry Carpenter

Age: 28. MLB debut: 2022.

Bats/throws: Left/right.

Stats in 2025: .252, 26 HR, 62 RBIs, 130 G.

Can he stay healthy? Carpenter played a career-high 130 games, but he still hasn't completed a fully healthy season. He posted a career-worst .788 OPS and continued to struggle against left-handed pitchers. In 2026, he will be dangerous against right-handers.

LF Riley Greene

Age: 25. MLB debut: 2022.

Bats/throws: Left/left.

Stats in 2025: .258, 36 HR, 111 RBIs, 157 G.

Can he cut down on strikeouts? Greene had a career high in home runs and an .806 OPS, but he set a franchise record with 201 strikeouts. He is the Tigers' best position player in 2026, but he needs to make more contact if he wants to leap into superstardom.

DH/RF Jahmai Jones

Age: 28. MLB debut: 2020.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .287, 7 HR, 23 RBIs, 72 G.

Does he repeat past production? Jones emerged as a right-handed weapon against left-handed pitchers (to complement Carpenter's role), producing a .970 OPS in 122 plate appearances. He returns as a key bench bat in 2026.

CF Parker Meadows

Age: 26. MLB debut: 2023.

Bats/throws: Left/right.

Stats in 2025: .215, 4 HR, 16 RBIs, 58 G.

Will he get sent to Triple-A Toledo? Meadows was derailed by injuries, but his performance slipped on offense and defense. He needs a successful 2026 – without a Triple-A demotion – to reclaim his status as the center fielder of the future.

RF/LF/CF Matt Vierling

Age: 29. MLB debut: 2021.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: .239, 1 HR, 11 RBIs, 31 G.

Is he a key difference-maker? Vierling was limited to 31 games due to injuries, resulting in an underrated absence for the Tigers following a career-best season. He has always been a leader behind the scenes, but entering a healthy 2026 campaign, he has a chance to reestablish his value on the field.

Starting pitchers (5)

RHP Jack Flaherty

Age: 30. MLB debut: 2017.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: 8-15 record, 4.64 ERA, 161 innings.

Can he fix walk rate? Flaherty regressed significantly, with his ERA rising as his walk rate climbed and his strikeout rate dipped. He exercised his $20 million player option to return in 2026, needing to regain his command to bounce back with his performance.

RHP Casey Mize

Age: 28. MLB debut: 2020.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: 14-6, 3.87 ERA, 149 IP.

Will splitter be useful? Mize delivered his most complete season, improving his walk rate and strikeout rate, but he had a 5.54 ERA in his final 13 starts. In 2026, he needs consistency with his once-revered splitter to take the next step with free agency looming.

LHP Tarik Skubal

Age: 29. MLB debut: 2020.

Bats/throws: Right/left.

Stats in 2025: 13-6, 2.21 ERA, 195⅓ IP.

Can he win third Cy Young? Skubal has been the best pitcher in baseball as the two-time AL Cy Young winner, producing a 2.30 ERA across 387⅓ innings in 62 starts during his reign. Entering 2026, the only questions are whether he can become the first AL pitcher in MLB history to three-peat as the Cy Young winner – and if he can lock in a $400 million payday in free agency.

LHP Framber Valdez

Age: 32. MLB debut: 2018.

Bats/throws: Right/left.

Stats in 2025: 13-11, 3.66 ERA, 192 IP.

Will he maintain durability? Valdez is a ground-ball artist who relies on strong infield defense, but he has established himself as one of the most durable starters in baseball, logging at least 175 innings in four seasons in a row. His value in 2026 depends on extending that track record after signing a two-year, $75 million contract.

RHP Justin Verlander

Age: 43. MLB debut: 2005.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: 4-11, 3.85 ERA, 152 IP.

How much left in the tank? Verlander remains effective when available, as exemplified by his 2.60 ERA in his final 13 starts, but injuries have limited his workload for several seasons. He returned to the Tigers on a one-year, $13 million contract, and as long as he stays healthy, he should be a positive contributor on the mound in 2026.

Relief pitchers (8)

RHP Drew Anderson

Age: 32. MLB debut: 2017.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025 (Korea): 12-7, 2.25 ERA, 171⅔ IP.

Can changeup translate to MLB? Anderson became a strikeout machine in Korea with a new swing-and-miss changeup, which he parlayed into a one-year, $7 million contract. He enters 2026 with momentum, but whether his changeup works against big-league hitters will define him.

LHP Enmanuel De Jesus

Age: 29. MLB debut: 2023.

Bats/throws: Left/left.

Stats in 2025 (Korea): 9-9, 3.96 ERA, 163⅔ IP.

Was spring success real? De Jesus impressed with his consistency in spring training after two seasons in Korea, combining a 93 mph fastball, two quality secondary pitches and steady command. In 2026, he needs to show the spring success – zero earned runs – can be replicated in games that matter.

RHP Kyle Finnegan

Age: 34. MLB debut: 2020.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: 4-4, 3.47 ERA, 57 IP.

Will he be too predictable? Finnegan thrived after the Tigers overhauled his pitch mix, leaning more on his splitter and less on his fastball. He returned in 2026 by signing a two-year, $16.75 million contract, but maintaining dominance will depend on staying unpredictable – possibly by throwing more sliders.

LHP Tyler Holton

Age: 29. MLB debut: 2022.

Bats/throws: Left/left.

Stats in 2025: 6-5, 3.66 ERA, 78⅔ IP.

Can he return to previous success? Holton had been one of the most effective relievers in baseball, but he suddenly regressed as the command of his cutter faltered – leading to a spike in home runs. In 2026, his bounce back in a do-it-all role depends on locating that pitch.

LHP Brant Hurter

Age: 27. MLB debut: 2024.

Bats/throws: Left/left.

Stats in 2025: 4-3, 2.43 ERA, 63 IP.

Can he avoid damage vs. righties? Hurter emerged as one of the Tigers' most effective relievers, thriving with a precision-over-power profile. He remains dominant against left-handed hitters, but limiting righties will determine his ceiling in 2026.

RHP Kenley Jansen

Age: 38. MLB debut: 2010.

Bats/throws: Both/right.

Stats in 2025: 5-4, 2.59 ERA, 59 IP.

Will he reach 500 saves? Jansen signed a one-year, $9 million contract, sitting 24 saves away from becoming the third reliever in MLB history to accomplish 500 saves. He begins his pursuit in 2026 without the guaranteed closer role, though he will get the first opportunity.

RHP Connor Seabold

Age: 30. MLB debut: 2021.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: 0-0, 4.35 ERA, 10⅓ IP.

Why did Tigers add him? Seabold signed a one-year, $800,000 contract just before the season after getting released by the Blue Jays. His 44.8% whiff rate in spring training ranked among the best, which is why the Tigers targeted him. He will rely on his fastball to succeed in 2026.

RHP Will Vest

Age: 30. MLB debut: 2021.

Bats/throws: Right/right.

Stats in 2025: 6-5, 3.01 ERA, 68⅔ IP.

Does he get All-Star status? Vest has established himself as a late-inning anchor with a dominant fastball-slider combination, which guided him to a 23-save season. He will pitch in the biggest moments again in 2026, giving him a path to All-Star recognition for the first time.
