VAUGHAN HOME SHOT AT AFTER VEHICLE ARSON ATTEMPT

Gunshots rang out at a Vaughan home Wednesday morning, police said, just two days after an attempted vehicle arson at the same residence.

York Regional Police said investigators are appealing for help from the public after officers responded to reports of gunshots in the area of Kleinburg Summit Way and First Nations Tr. just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When officers arrived, police said they found shell casings in the driveway of a residence. A black sport utility vehicle was seen driving away shortly after the shots were fired.

The shooting followed an attempted vehicle arson at the same residence in the early morning hours Monday.

During that incident, cops said a dark-coloured sedan was observed stopping on the street in front of the house at approximately 2:50 a.m.

According to police, two male suspects exited their vehicle, approached a vehicle parked in the driveway and poured gasoline on it. They then attempted to ignite the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.

Police said no injuries were reported in either incident.

The first suspect is only described as wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and black shoes.

The second suspect has a light complexion and was wearing a red bandana, black-hooded sweater, white t-shirt, black sweatpants, and black and grey shoes.

Investigators are working to determine whether the two incidents are connected, cops said. They are particularly interested in obtaining video surveillance or dash-camera footage from the area that may have captured the roadways around the time of the incident.

On Wednesday night, York cops said they are aware of “videos circulating on social media that appear to have been posted by the suspects.”

Police added: “The source of the videos is being looked into and we thank members of the public who have shared additional evidence with us.”

Anyone who has information who has not yet spoken with police is urged to call police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7817, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

TWO MEN WANTED FOR VEHICLE SCAM IN SCUGOG

Two men from Romania are wanted by police following a vehicle scam in Scugog.

Durham Regional Police said its Financial Crimes Unit began investigating the duo in January after receiving information that they allegedly damaged a used vehicle to buy it at a lower price.

Police said the suspects responded to a Facebook Marketplace ad and went to the victim’s Scugog home to view the vehicle. While test‑driving it, they distracted the victim and deliberately damaged the engine by covering it with oil.

According to police, the pair then falsely claimed the vehicle had serious mechanical problems and that the engine was ruined. Based on these false claims, cops said they pressured the victim into selling the vehicle at a significantly reduced price.

Marius Zorila, 31, and Constantin Tanase, 26, are both wanted for fraud over $5,000, mischief over $5,000, and possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Cops said both suspects are also wanted by other police agencies and are facing charges for similar scams.

Investigators believe there may be other victims and released images of the suspects.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident or similar incidents to call police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5352, or Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

According to police, the accused entered the business and made threats with a knife toward employees while demanding cash. The suspect went behind the counter and stole money from the cash register before fleeing the area on foot.

After officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was located a short distance away. After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody.

At the time of his arrest, cops said the suspect was already on conditions not to be in possession of any knives.
