The Oilers won four Stanley Cups with Wayne Gretzky in the 1980s and another after he left for the Los Angeles Kings. Edmonton played in the past two Stanley Cup finals as well, though they lost both to the Florida Panthers.

On Monday, the franchise celebrated exciting news. Its home arena, Rogers Place, will host the championship game of the World Cup of Hockey in 2028. The NHL announced that Edmonton, Calgary and Prague will host games at the world’s next best-on-best tournament. The semifinals and title game will be in Edmonton.

As a result, the Oilers’ X account posted, “We are thrilled that Edmonton has been selected as a co-host of the World Cup of Hockey 2028 alongside our partners in Calgary.”

David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins, Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche and Connor McDavid of the Oilers made the official announcement on NHL’s X account. Pastrnak is from Czechia; Makar is from Calgary, and McDavid is the face of the Oilers.

The Oilers later posted a video featuring international competition highlights from the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off won by Canada. The video did not contain highlights from the most recent international competition, the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics won by Team USA.

Meanwhile, the World Cup of Hockey, sponsored by the NHL and NHLPA and set for February 2028, features eight teams. Prague’s O2 Arena will serve as the host for games played in Europe. Calgary will have a new arena, Scotia Place, open by the time the World Cup of Hockey begins.

“There is no international competition in sports that matches the passion, skill, and excitement of hockey’s best-on-best coming together to represent their countries — last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off and the recent Winter Olympics were just the latest examples,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.
