NFL free agency: CB Star Thomas returns to Arizona Cardinals

· Yahoo Sports

The Arizona Cardinals didn't tender him as a restricted free agent, but he is returning to the team in 2026. The team announced Thursday that cornerback Star Thomas V agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

This will be Thomas' fourth season in Arizona. He tore his ACL in training camp and spent the whole season on injured reserve. Provided there were no complications or setbacks, he should be ready to go in training camp.

The Cardinals acquired Thomas on a waiver claim in 2023 after he was cut by the Detroit Lions, with whom he signed as an undrafted rookie.

In 2023-2024, he appeared in 29 games, starting 22 of them. Over the two seasons, he had 85 tackles, two tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups and a forced fumble.

Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis finds Thomas reliable, so he very well might have a starting role on defense, but he also can play on special teams.

The cornerback room hasn't had any new faces, but even with Garrett Williams coming back from a late-season torn Achilles that means he will miss at least the start of the season. the battle between Thomas, Will Johnson, Max Melton, Denzel Burke, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Kei'Trel Clark will be one to watch.

By agreeing to terms with Thomas, the Cardinals' only unsigned and non-tendered restricted or exclusive rights free agents are running back Emari Demercado and tight end Travis Vokolek.
