Víctor Font opened his campaign to become FC Barcelona president by pushing back against Joan Laporta’s attacks. The businessman is in a one-on-one race with the outgoing president, and it’s not a surprise that each are firing volleys at the others.

It started with Font calling Laporta’s reign as “the Barça of the past,” and additionally, “the Barça of Negreira, the Neymar case, Bartogate…”

Laporta fired back: “Font is amplifying the biggest institutional smear campaign Barça has ever faced, orchestrated by Real Madrid fans and the media establishment. Playing into their hands … seems sad to me as a Barça supporter.”

“I think this is once again defamation or manipulation of reality. That harms Barça,” Font responded recently.

“The main poeple affected by the Negreira case are the culés. Either we end the malpractice or Barça will remain in danger. We are losing the ‘More than a club’ spirit.”

Back in the race five years after finishing second, Font now faces Laporta alone after Marc Ciria was disqualified.

“We are convinced we will win, even if public opinion thinks Laporta will,” he said, referencing the fact that Laporta is widely considered the favorite to win the race.

“If Barça counts on everyone, it is unstoppable. There are no good or bad guys. This is a project for everyone. This is not about one person against another, but about which Barça we want for the coming years.”

Font referenced his previous loss to Laporta more than a decade ago. “We ‘listened to the ball’ in 2015 when we voted for a treble, and look at how it ended. We were wrong. Let’s not repeat that.”

He criticized recent club management, pointing to questionable partnerships, voting restrictions, and legal disputes that affected Barça’s reputation. “What harms Barça are all these cases that end up in courts, questioning the club’s reputation, and they are a consequence of doing things without transparency.”

Font has called for opening the Gol Nord on election day to make voting easier. Voting is scheduled for March 15th.

“The honest, transparent, professional Barça, led by its people, begins on the 15th” he said.
