Warning to renew vehicle licence discs before Easter long weekend

Motorists planning to travel over the Easter long weekend are being urged to check the validity of their vehicle licence discs and driving licence cards, as the NaTIS system indicates that 700 399 vehicle licence discs will expire at the end of March 2026.

The Easter long weekend will be from 3 to 6 April next month.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the renewals will affect motorists across all provinces.

Provincial Breakdown: Vehicle Licence Discs

The provinces with the highest number of expiring vehicle licence discs are:

  • Gauteng – 259 563 vehicles
  • Western Cape – 116 633 vehicles
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 98 735 vehicles
  • Mpumalanga – 51 198 vehicles
  • Limpopo – 45 240 vehicles
  • Eastern Cape – 44 840 vehicles
  • North West – 36 335 vehicles
  • Free State – 31 964 vehicles
  • Northern Cape – 15 891 vehicles

Driving Licence Cards Also Expiring

In addition, 128 080 driving licence cards are set to expire during the same period.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • Gauteng – 44 142 drivers
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 20 188 drivers
  • Western Cape – 17 108 drivers
  • Mpumalanga – 12 515 drivers
  • Limpopo – 11 831 drivers
  • Eastern Cape – 8 404 drivers
  • North West – 6 187 drivers
  • Free State – 5 471 drivers
  • Northern Cape – 2 234 drivers

Online Renewal Option

The RTMC has encouraged motorists to renew their vehicle licence discs online via the national traffic information system platform.

“The disc will be delivered within three to five working days. More than six million vehicle licence discs have been processed through this platform since it became available in 2022,” the RTMC said.

Drivers in Gauteng, Gqeberha and Kariega in the Eastern Cape can also use the platform to pre-book appointments to renew driving licence cards.

Motorists in other provinces are advised to visit their nearest driving licence testing centres.

Authorities have urged road users to ensure all documentation is valid before embarking on long-distance travel to avoid fines and delays during the busy Easter period.
