Von Memerty, best known as host of Strictly Come Dancing and a judge on SA’s Got Talent, died by suicide at about 03:00 on Monday, 23 February at a hotel in Johannesburg.
Ignited public debate
The Zimbabwean-born entertainer, who had been living in Gqeberha with his family, had in recent weeks ignited public debate through a series of videos and blog posts titled Dying for a Better Life, published on his official Facebook page and YouTube channel.
In the recordings, he described his intention to end his life, framing the decision as what he termed “self-deliverance”. Some of the videos were released posthumously.

A close family friend, Gary Hemmings, confirmed his passing. The family initially chose to keep the matter private to allow time to mourn.
In a statement, they said: “We are sad to announce that our beloved Ian von Memerty passed away at the age of 61 in Johannesburg in the early hours of February 23.
As a family we have done everything we can to love and respect him on his journey.
We ask for privacy and respect as we deal with our own pain, having lost someone we’ve loved very much.”
Final interviews and public reflections
In interviews conducted weeks before his death, Ian von Memerty said his decision followed 18 months of research and reflection. He stated that it was not motivated by depression, but by what he described as agency and personal conviction.
He cited severe financial strain, the emotional impact of witnessing his parents’ prolonged deaths, and concerns about ageing as factors influencing his choice. He also spoke about drafting a personal “contract” to keep himself focused on the path he had chosen.
While acknowledging that many would call his death suicide, Von Memerty argued that the term did not reflect what he viewed as a deliberate and considered process.
A celebrated stage and screen career
Born on 4 July 1964, Ian von Memerty built a decades-long career as a theatre director, performer, writer, producer and television presenter. He received 15 national theatre awards and 17 nominations over the course of his career.
His most celebrated stage production was the two-piano revue A Handful of Keys, which he co-conceived and wrote. The production ran for more than 1 500 performances and was seen by over 500 000 audience members, becoming one of the longest-running and most commercially successful theatre shows in South Africa.
Beyond theatre, he was a familiar face on television, hosting Muziek a la Carte and contributing to numerous compilation and revue-style productions. His final professional engagements included guest performances aboard cruise ships.
Family and advocacy
Ian von Memerty was married to Viv from 1991 until 2025. The couple had three children.
Their two eldest children, Valeksa and Oscar, were diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome), a rare genetic disorder affecting multiple organs and systems. The family became advocates for improved access to treatment and support for families affected by rare diseases.
Valeksa died in 1998 following complications from a bone marrow transplant. Oscar survived serious medical complications and now lives an active and independent life.
Renewed discussion
Ian von Memerty’s death has sparked renewed discussion about end-of-life autonomy, mental health and the responsibilities of public platforms in conversations about suicide.
