15 from area advance to PJW junior high state championships

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Nine boys and six girls from the area advanced to the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling junior high state championships Saturday at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial.

Bishop McCort Catholic's Sanchir Edington (117 pounds) and Noah Losey (110); Chestnut Ridge's Kayne Burkett (117), Crew Musselman (96), Grayden Paris (82) and Brennen Veverka (110); Conemaugh Township's Rolly Walylko (124); Penn Cambria's Evan Becker (82); and Portage's Joey Myers (82) each advanced to the semifinals on the boys side.

Central Cambria's Kaydence Sinclair (127), Chestnut Ridge's Caelan McElroy (133), Greater Johnstown's Timi Coles (102) and Ella Heyne (96), Meyersdale's Jenna Gabuya (112) and Portage's Ellie Myers (107) are in the semifinals in girls action.

At 110 in the boys bracket, three of the four semifinalists are from the area in Becker, Losey and Veverka. Losey, who pinned Ridley's Dylan Laird in 2:09 during a quarterfinal bout, will face Avon Grove's Brady Watson Saturday. Becker, who edged Connellsville's Jake Sparks 1-0 in a quarterfinal match, will face Veverka, who pinned Kiski Area's Owen Brown in 1:03, Saturday in a semifinal showdown.

Paris won by fall in 1:14 over North Allegheny's James Sowa in an 82 quarterfinal. Next up for Paris is Haverford's Diksa. Joey Myers, who beat Seneca Valley's Grant Kemrer 11-5, will meet West Branch's Andrew Edwards in an all-District 6 semifinal.

Musselman pinned Kane's Mason Myers in 1:14. Musselman opposes Jersey Shore's Amari Brobeck Saturday.

Burkett won by fall in 1:59 over Harveys Lake's Hunter Kapitula, and will meet Edington, who won 15-0 in a technical fall over Boiling Springs' Liam Snook, in a 117 semifinal.

Walylko defeated North Hills' William Hillegas 15-0 in a tech fall that lasted 2:57. Walylko will face York Suburban's Brody Mayfield Saturday.

In girls action, Heyne pinned Charleroi's Angelina Destefano in 2:57 during a quarterfinal bout. Heyne will meet DuBois' Jacie Bush Saturday.

Coles won 17-2 in a tech fall that lasted 3:28 over Yough's Mia Zugai. Coles opposes Downington West's Mikayla Dunn next.

Ellie Myers pinned Cumberland Valley's Claire Brion in 2:38, and meets Shaler's Briana Stetson.

Gabuya shut out United's Peyton Johnson 4-0, and faces Upper Dauphin's Guilianna Latshaw Saturday.

Sinclair recorded a 13-2 major decision over Manheim Township's Abby Williard, and opposes Canon-McMillan's Noelle Miller next.

McElroy pinned Manheim Township's Leigha Ruby in 4:10, and will meet Bradford's Caydence Shugars.

The event concludes Sunday with semifinals and the medal bouts.
