With South Africa heavy favourites heading in that clash, and boasting a superior Net Run Rate, the Proteas are virtually assured of finishing top of their group.

If this finish transpires as expected, they will face the second-placed finishers in Group 2, which is New Zealand, the team they beat during the initial pool phase of the competition.

Unless there is a dramatic turn of events, the Proteas will play the Kiwis in the first semi-final on Wednesday, 4 March in Kolkata. Play would start at 15:30 (SA time).

MASSIVE MOMENT FOR PROTEAS AT THE T20 WORLD CUP

State of play

After the result of Sri Lanka’s Super 8 contest against Pakistan, New Zealand have been confirmed as the third semi-finalists at the World Cup.

Required to win the contest by 65 runs in order to progress through, Pakistan were unable to hold Sri Lanka under the 147 run-mark. The co-hosts put in a resilient display with the bat, only to miss out on the target by five runs.

New Zealand now join England and South Africa among the semi-finalists. England confirmed their spot by winning all three of their Super 8 games, while South Africa remain unbeaten and will face Zimbabwe tomorrow in their final Super 8 fixture.

The final spot will be up for the grabs as India face West Indies in the last Super-8 contest on Sunday in Kolkata.
