Tennessee's Calvin Wetzel named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Tennessee graduate student and track and field athlete Calvin Wetzel was named the 2026 SEC Men's Indoor Track and Field Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The honor recognizes his accomplishments on the track and in the classroom throughout his collegiate career.

Wetzel, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and sprinter for the Vols, earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master's degree in computer science. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in computer science.

He transferred from Army to Tennessee in 2021.

This season, he has recorded personal bests in the 300 meter dash (33.30 seconds) and the 400 meter dash (46.85). His time in the 400 meter dash is the 11th fastest time recorded in program history. Wetzel also helped Tennessee with a time of 3:05.13 at the Clemson Invitational, ranking seventh in Vols' history.

He is the first Vol to receive SEC Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year honors since Jacob Lewis during the 2024 indoor season. Wetzel shares this year's award with Alabama's Samuel Ogazi and Oklahoma's Brandon Green Jr.
