Central DeWitt girls’ basketball’s depth propels them to State tournament

· Yahoo Sports

After losing the first game of the season back in November, the Central DeWitt girls’ basketball team has been on a mission.

The Sabers have won 23 games in a row, went undefeated in the MAC, and are now heading back to the State tournament for a second straight year. The Sabers have a deep bench, and each player knows its role.

“Everyone, all those nine players contribute. Like that’s hard to guard a team that’s like that and yeah it helps us win games really,” said Ava Putman, a Central DeWitt senior.

“Five of us seniors have been playing forever, and then two sisters stepping up huge and then other girls stepping up huge this season,” said Kinley Birt, a Central DeWitt senior. “I really think that shows who we are, and each nine players contributed (against Solon). In the locker room before the game, I was like it’s going to take everyone to win this game tonight, and it’s going to take everyone to win out at State. So I think that just really shows who we are as a team.”

“They put in the work the last three years for most of them, four for some of them. They are bonded, they get together, they play hard. It’s someone different every game, every night, and that’s kind of something that has carried us this year,” said Ron O’Brien, Central DeWitt girls’ basketball’s head coach. “Got to continue what we are doing. Ya know, I think it is pace on offense, pace on defense, and just having confidence in what they can do.”

The Sabers will take on Norwalk in the 4A state quarterfinals in Des Moines on March 3. It’s a bit of a revenge game for Central DeWitt as the Sabers lost to Norwalk in the quarterfinals a year ago.
