Nets to continue learning, growing amidst fourth-quarter miscues

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets came into the 2025-26 NBA season with the goal of developing as many of the younger players on the roster as possible, regardless of the result. Brooklyn has struggled to finish games on multiple occasions this season, partially due to how young the team is, but the players and coaching staff are trying to remain focused on growing as opposed to getting frustrated.

"I think the guys have done a great job. You give yourself a chance being up seven with five minutes to go, the second group was amazing," Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said prior to Tuesday's game against the Dallas Mavericks. While the Nets are focused on trying to beat a Mavericks team missing star rookie Cooper Flagg and former Nets guard Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn still has to figure out how to close games if they're going to turn their season around.

"I think the whole team competed, played the right way. We didn't see the ball go in, we didn't get any stops," Fernandez continued when explaining why the Nets were on the wrong end of a 24-2 run in the final eight minutes of their 115-104 loss at the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. "It was an 18-0 run, and we just got to learn from it. The guys were frustrated because nobody likes to lose. But, the vibe and the day-to-day is very good."

After Brooklyn amassed at 104-97 lead over the Hawks with 5:19 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss, Atlanta proceeded to finish the game on a 18-0 run, capping off another disappointing loss. During that lopsided run in favor of the Hawks, the Nets shot 0-for-9 from the field, including 0-for-6 from three-point land while also turning the ball over three times.

In the clutch, which the NBA describes as games within five points at any point in the last five minutes, the Nets have a 5-19 record, giving them the worst win percentage in the league this season in such circumstances. Fernandez, in his second year as Brooklyn's head coach, will have to find a way to put his team in a better position to close games and it seems like his players are more focused on being better in those situations as well.
