Gauteng police arrested the pair after private security guards reported the shooting of a 23-year-old gardener. They were detained at the Bramley police station and are facing charges of attempted murder.
Police said the shooting allegedly emanated from a labour dispute between the victim and the suspects.
POSSIBILITY OF THIRD SUSPECT
During a search of the premises, officers recovered a cartridge. The firearm used in the shooting has not yet been found and the search is ongoing.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police could not rule out the possibility of a third suspect.
“The gun has not been found. Definitely, there might be a third hand that is involved that knows where the gun is, but that is something we are looking at in terms of our investigation,” she said.
The injured gardener was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Meanwhile, Activists and Citizens Forum condemned the incident and called on authorities not to give the suspects preferential treatment.
“Criminality must be treated purely as criminality, and politics must not play any role in the criminal justice system. The shooting incident that occurred at the home of the former president of Zimbabwe is purely a criminal act, and must be treated as such.
“Crime is out of hand in the country, especially where guns are involved. The court must send a strong message that criminality will not be tolerated in this country,” the organisation said in a statement on Sunday.
