  • Leaders:Jacob Bridgeman and Marco Penge share the 36-hole lead at 12 under, one shot up on current tournament favorite Rory McIlroy.

  • Favorite: Scottie Scheffler entered at +300 to win but narrowly made the cut and begins the weekend 12 shots off the pace.

  • Course: Riviera Country Club played much friendlier on Friday after rain and gusty winds played havoc with the field on Thursday.

  • Weather: Clear and dry conditions are expected for the remainder of the tournament.

  • Expected cut: This Signature Event features a 36-hole cut to the Top 50 and ties, plus any player within 10 shots of the lead; this year's cut landed at even par, with 51 players making it to the weekend.

Best bets update

  • 🔴 Outright: Scottie Scheffler (+300) – World No. 1 was fortunate to make the cut, and a 12-shot hole is probably too much even for him. (3 units)

  • 🔴 Outright: Viktor Hovland (+3500) – Hovland squandered ideal conditions Friday, stumbling to a 73 to barely make the cut at even par. (1 unit)

  • 🟢 Top 20: Max Homa (+175) – Homa had no such problem, blazing his way to a second-round 66 to move into a tie for 12th at 6 under. (0.5 units)

  • 🟡 Top 30: Tony Finau (+105) – I like this play a little less than I did Thursday with Finau now T33, but there's still plenty of time left. (0.5 units)

  • ✅ Matchup: Matt Fitzpatrick Over Chris Gotterup (-118) – Here's the first win of the weekend, with Fitzpatrick near the top of the leaderboard and previously red-hot Gotterup missing the cut at 3 over. (0.25 units)

  • 🟢 Matchup: Collin Morikawa Over Cameron Young (-125) – Morikawa gave a shot back Friday but still leads by three; he has looked good at Riviera. (0.25 units)

  • ❌ First-round leader: Xander Schauffele (+2500) – Schauffele finished with a 3 under 68 in Round 1. Strong, but not strong enough. (0.5 units)

Course breakdown: What wins at Genesis Invitational?

If you ask me, Johnny Miller summed it up perfectly, saying Riviera “requires a player to use every club in his bag and every shot in his game.”

Designed by G.C. Thomas Jr. and W.P. Bell, the 7,300-yard Par 71 is a demanding track with treelined fairways and difficult-to-read Poa Annua greens. Be ready to hear all about the sticky and gnarly Kikuyugrass rough, too, as misplaced shots are all the more difficult to recover.

Course knowledge and experience count, and it’s also no wonder recent winners include major champions Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, and Dustin Johnson.

Distance is a huge plus, but accuracy off the tee is also critical. Additionally, the winner has gained true strokes putting each of the past nine years, so successfully navigating the greens is a must, especially from the five- to 10-foot range.

Finally, I also value that each of the past five winners has finished Top 3 in true strokes gained tee-to-green.

  • Demanding looks off the tee with windy, treelined fairways
  • Kikuyugrass rough is penalizing
  • Poa Annua greens are difficult to read
  • The Par 4 10th is drivable

Weather update

Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast Saturday with a high temperature of 63 degrees. Winds will blow out of the northeast at 6-8 mph. Dry weather is in the extended forecast through the weekend with a light sea breeze each day. Temperatures are expected to warm into the low-70s on Sunday.

Key stats & player profiles to target

  • True strokes gained tee-to-green
  • Approaches from 150-175 yards, and 175-200 yards
  • True strokes gained putting
  • Bogey avoidance
  • Total driving

Outright picks: winners to bet

Pick 1: Scottie Scheffler to win (+300)

Scottie Scheffler is on a massive heater and Riviera is a nearly perfect setup for his elite tee-to-green game.

  • Course Fit: Has gained true strokes on approach in each visit here
  • Recent Form: World No. 1 has 19 consecutive Top 10s with seven wins
  • Market Value: Price is fair given the form and course fit

Risk: Short return on +300 odds means more risk.

Pick 2: Viktor Hovland to win (+3500)

Viktor Hovland is a ball-striking wizard who has gained true strokes on approach in nine consecutive events to rank sixth in this field in the metric.

  • Course Fit: Top 20s in all four trips to Riviera
  • Recent Form: Six Top 15s across past eight events
  • Market Value: Solid return for a proven winner

Risk: Hovland wasn't as sharp last week at Pebble Beach.

Best Top finishing position bets

Pick 1: Max Homa to finish top 20 (+175)

The 2021 Genesis winner has gained true strokes across the board at Riviera while posting five consecutive Top 20s. Max Homa is a horse for this course.

Market Fit: Current form has Homa a popular longshot bet
Key Stat: Field leader in true strokes gained (minimum 24 rounds)

Risk: No Top 20s through past three starts.

Pick 2: Tony Finau to finish top 30 (+105)

With consecutive Top 20s at Riviera, in addition to two more runner-ups (2021 and 2018), this track sets up for Tony Finau.

Market Fit: Odds aren’t fully pricing in track record of success here
Key Stat: Five Top 20s at Riviera in last seven trips

Risk: Last Top 10 was in 2025 Genesis at Torrey Pines.

Matchup & head-to-head bets

Pick 1: Matt Fitzpatrick over Chris Gotterup (-118)

Chris Gotterup will be making his debut at Riviera, and he’s lost true strokes putting in three consecutive events, while Fitzpatrick is here for the fifth time and ranks fifth in this field in true strokes gained tee-to-green, third on approaches and fifth in driving accuracy.

Matchup Advantage: Course knowledge favors Fitzpatrick, with rookies usually struggling at Riviera
Key Stat: Gotterup has lost true strokes putting in three straight events

Risk: Gotterup already has a pair of 2026 wins.

Pick 2: Collin Morikawa Over Cameron Young (-125)

Cameron Young has finished lower in each of his past five tournaments and ranks 41st in this field in true strokes gained tee-to-green to start the 2026 season. Collin Morikawa, meanwhile, is coming off a win and finished T19-T6-T2 in his past three trips to Riviera.

Matchup Advantage: Young has lost true strokes on approach in consecutive events
Key Stat: Morikawa led field in true strokes gained tee-to-green last week

Risk: Young also has solid course history at Riviera.

First-round leader bets

Pick 1: Xander Schauffele (+2500)

Heading to Riviera for the eighth time, and Xander Schauffele carded a 66 and 65 to finish T4 in 2024 edition.

Market Fit: Priced below top tier despite proven course success
Key Stat: Elite +2.02 true strokes gained per round at Riviera

Risk: Schauffele hasn’t been in top form to start the season.

Spotlight Hole: No. 12

Par 4, 479 yards

Riviera is a tough test overall – but the par-4 12th is particularly daunting for even the best players in the world. It has played at an unreal +0.30 shots over par since 2021, and will likely spoil plenty more scorecards this week.
