Does Canada feel comfortable with Jordan Binnington going forward?

· Yahoo Sports

Team Canada is looking great offensively heading into the quarterfinals of the Olympic hockey tournament. Their offense is fantastic, led by Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario. He has simply been amazing, and has nine points in Canada’s first three games.

The concern for Canada for months has always been goaltending. Even though Jordan Binnington shutout the Czechs 5-0 to open the Olympic hockey tournament in Milan on Wednesday, Canadian hockey fans should be very concerned that the shaky and inconsistent St. Louis Blues goaltender gave up two goals to France in their 10-2 Sunday win.

Binnington only saw 14 shots in the contest, but gave up two goals. The concern for many is that how many goals would Binnington give up if he is not on his game or playing a tougher opponent.

Canada is going to face much more challenging opponents than France going forward, and there is a feeling by many in the hockey community that Canada would have significantly more consistent goaltending if they went with either Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan or Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson of Calgary, Alberta.

Binnington’s terrible season with the Blues

You could make the argument that Binnington has been one of the very worst goaltenders in the National Hockey League this season. He has a record of eight wins and 17 losses. Binnington’s eight wins ranks him 48th in the NHL.

Binnington also has a terrible goals against average of 3.65 (51st in the NHL) and save percentage of .864 (50th in the NHL).

You could also make the argument that Binnington is not even the best Canadian goaltender on the St. Louis Blues this season. Joel Hofer of Winnipeg, Manitoba is second in the NHL this season in shutouts (four), has more wins than Binnington (12), and has a better goals against average (2.94), and save percentage (895).

Who does Canada play next in the quarterfinals?

Canada will play either Czechia or Denmark in the quarterfinals. The game will be played on Wednesday.

You may think Denmark may be the easier opponent. Remember, Denmark eliminated Canada in the quarterfinals of the 2025 World Men’s Hockey Championships. The Canadians team featured Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and goaltender Jordan Binnington.
