Big 12 mulling action against Texas Tech after Brendan Sorsby ruling

· Yahoo Sports

As things currently stand, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is set to play for the Red Raiders in 2026.

Sorsby received a temporary injunction in Lubbock County court on Monday that prevents the NCAA from enforcing its rules around student-athletes and gambling. Sorsby admitted to wagering more than $90,000 on college and pro sports over the last four years, including 40 bets on Indiana football games during his time with the Hoosiers.

He recently spent 35 days at a rehabilitation facility receiving treatment for gambling addiction.

With his trial against the NCAA now set for Feb. 8 — two weeks after the national championship game — time is now on Sorsby's side. Still, that doesn't mean he and the Red Raiders couldn't face consequences from their own league.

The Big 12's athletics directors and commissioner Brett Yormark are set to hold a conference call on Tuesday to consider what actions they can take against Texas Tech in light of the ruling — up to and including conference teams refusing to play the Red Raiders in 2026, per ESPN's Pete Thamel.

According to Thamel, no decision is expected imminently. After Tuesday's meeting, the executive board will meet Thursday to discuss its options. That will likely be followed by a full Big 12 board call early next week.

Since the Big 12 was not a subject of Sorsby's lawsuit against the NCAA, Judge Ken Curry's injunction does not prevent the conference from penalizing Sorsby in any way.

This saga is far from over, and while it currently looks like the path is clear for Sorsby to suit up this fall, a lot could still change before the season kicks off in September.
